The Insured, who provides Intermediary services to the financial, energy and commodities market, notified Underwriters of a network outage issue which affected various server platforms across the world. The outage impacted IT systems across different Insured entities and each service experienced downtime for various times, ranging from 24 hours to 7 days. The Insured conducted its own internal review and was supported by an outside Forensic Vendor. It was determined that the underlying cause of the network outage was a rare combination of issues involving both software and hardware (provided by third parties). The faults on both software and hardware caused a “bug”, and when this “bug” occurred it rendered the Insured’s core IT infrastructure unstable, causing the system failure. The outage had a substantial financial impact on the company which outside forensic vendors calculated for reimbursement.
